Snow Day 1: Stein am Rhein and Rheinau

Saturday 5 January 2019

Day 5 we hired a car and drove to the small, medieval town of Stein am Rhein where we saw real snow for the very first time this trip! Everything looked really beautiful dusted in fresh snow. Strolled through the old town which is known for its preserved, half timbered houses with painted facades dating back to the middle ages.

Crossed the border into Germany so took a picture at the uncontrolled border.

Then had lunch at Restaurant Augarten.

The Riesling soup was extraordinary. Tried to get the recipe but no-go.

We walked around the beautiful town in the snow.

Trevor had organised a visit to a winery in Eglisau called Winegut Pitcher.  They have been growing wine in the area on the slopes of the Hinterburg since 891CE.  A couple of our friends are not really wine drinkers (Keedah and Shaun) but we all had a wonderful time anyway.

On the way home we dropped into the castle town of Regensberg, the ancestral home Trevor's family, the Angsts. The first of the Angst' line in Regensberg was Hans Heinrich Angst born on August 29, 1665, the son of the butcher and judge Hans Angst. He moved to Regensberg and married the pastor's daughter. In time, the local château was turned into a hotel which was run by the Angst family.

They still had their Christmas decorations up and it was very beautiful.

The Angst family crest is enshrined in the stained glass windows of the Regensberg church.

We drove back to Zurich for dinner.  Stopped in at a wine and cocktail bar called the Old Crow.  Had some Swiss Absinthe (only 68% alcohol...)
