French Day 2: Sion, Château de Chillon, Bern

Friday 4 January 2019

Day 4 – Caught the train to Sion where we climbed the hilltop of the ruins of Château de Tourbillon, the 13th century fort. The views were amazing!

Had a lovely lunch at Sion. Being just after New Year they were running on skeleton staff so had a compulsory set menu. Entrecote Café de Paris. We didn’t know what that was, but we didn’t have a choice. We were all very pleasantly surprised at how awesome it was. Steak in Café de Paris butter sauce. With pomme frittes. Yum! We all agreed it was the nicest steak meals we had the whole trip.

Unfortunately, having to fit a lot into our schedule, we left earlier than we would have liked, to jump back on the train to travel further west to Montreaux, summer playground of the wealthy Swiss. Strolled along the Swiss Riviera on Lake Geneva, the home of Freddy Mercury’s famous statue.

Continuing along the lake we came to the Château de Chillon, another beautiful Medieval castle.

Very interesting history complete with the obligatory dungeon.

Onto our final destination of the day - Bern.  A beautiful medieval town, very different to anything else we'd seen in Switzerland.  The famous clock below was the inspiration for Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Then onto dinner at the opulent Kornhauskeller (Corn house cellar).
